What is a laser measure?
A laser measure (also called a laser tape measure or laser distance meter) is a pocket-size tool that measures distance with a beam of light instead of a metal tape.
- How it works: put the back of the tool against one wall and aim the red dot at the opposite wall. It reads the light that bounces back and shows the distance on the screen almost instantly.
- When you'd use one: room sizes for flooring or carpet, wall areas for paint, checking whether a sofa or rug will fit, ceiling heights, and window widths for curtains. It's handy anywhere a tape would sag or need a second person.
- What it can't do: it needs a surface for the dot to hit, and the dot is hard to see in bright sun. You'll still want a regular tape for short cuts and marking a board.

Easiest to use: Bosch GLM100-23
This is the one I own (my unit is dated April 2025). It has two buttons: one measures, and one rounds the reading (anywhere from 1/32 in. to 1/2 in.) so it's easy to write down. It fits in a shirt pocket and starts measuring as soon as you turn it on.
Good to know: Bosch rates it for indoor use only, and it only measures distance. It won't work out square footage for you.

Outside, a red dot disappears in the sun. The GLM400C has a camera screen with zoom, so you aim at what you see on the screen instead of hunting for the dot. It reaches 400 ft. It also measures angles, does area and volume math for you, and sends readings to your phone through the free Bosch MeasureOn app.

Quick answers
Will it replace my tape measure?
For rooms and long distances, yes. For short cuts and marking boards, keep the tape.
Can it figure square footage?
The GLM400C can. With the GLM100-23 or the Klein, you measure the length and width and multiply them yourself.
